Tangier sits at the northern tip of Morocco where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic — and is the main entry point for European travellers crossing by ferry from Spain. A rental car from Tangier lets you drive the length of Morocco: south to Chefchaouen (1.5 hours) and the Rif Mountains, down the Atlantic coast to Rabat and Casablanca, or straight on the motorway to Fès and Marrakech. The A1/A4 motorway south is one of Morocco's best — smooth, well-signed, and fast.
Most ferry passengers arrive at Tangier Med port (50 km east of the city centre) or Tangier Ville port (in the city). Local agencies are concentrated near the Grand Socco and Boulevard Mohammed VI in the city centre. Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG) is 15 km southwest of the city. A standard city car handles the entire route to Marrakech and beyond without difficulty — the motorways are in excellent condition and all-year driveable.
