Fès is Morocco's most historically rich city — Fès el-Bali medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the world's largest car-free urban areas. A rental car gives you freedom beyond the city: Meknès (1 hour west), the Roman ruins of Volubilis (45 minutes), the cedar forests of Azrou (1.5 hours south), and the Middle Atlas plateau. Fès is also the ideal launch point for the grand Sahara circuit through Ifrane, Midelt, Errachidia, and the Merzouga dunes.
Fès-Saïss Airport (FEZ) is 15 km south of the city. Several local agencies operate from the arrivals hall or from the Ville Nouvelle district near the train station.
